What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is the address to where your website lives. It shares the same concept as a physical address. But to get to a physical address you have to walk, run or drive verses typing the domain name (URL) in the browsers web address bar to take you to a specific website. Either way, a website owner's domain represents rented space on the internet.
The structure of a domain name is built out of three fields. For example: www.ajmwebdesigner.com.
www- stands for "World Wide Web".
ajmwebdesigner- represents my ownership of this domain. One could call their domain whatever they like. But when choosing a domain name, it is best to choose a domain name that leaves a hint as to what your website is about.
com- represents the use of the domain. There are many types of domains with different uses. i.e. organizations, educations and government.
How to Choose a Domain Name
Choose a domain name that is catchy, but represents your company. You want visitors to know what your website is about. Keep it short. You don't want a long domain that is hard to remember. To improve the ranking in the indexes and other lists of sites, it would be a good idea to choose a domain name that starts with "a" or "b", or even with a number, as in the the following example: "123money.com".
Tip: When deciding what your domain name should be, come up with at least 5 variations. This way if one is not available you have other options to fall back on.
